The Importance of Education in Developing Countries

One of the many projects being worked on by Ankush Foundation is a project to educate children in the slum areas and villages in Hisar District of Haryana. Education should be every child’s birthright, but all too often it is one of the first things to be neglected. Some cultures actively try to stop education, to all or some, while when a community is poor, education cannot either be afforded or there are greater priorities out there such as simple survival.

This is where Ankush Foundation can come in. While education should be a fundamental right for children, they also need to be inspired to learn and convinced of the benefits. In addition to this, there are a whole range of hurdles to overcome before education can even begin. For example, teachers need to be trained, schools need to be built and equipment needs to be bought. While there is always a high-tech well-trained ideal in education, even some of the simplest actions can get the ball rolling and have a positive effect on the communities being helped.

All told, approximately 75,000,000 children across the world have no access to primary education. The majority of these are girls. The vast majority of these children are from poor, disadvantaged or broken backgrounds. As noted above, there are many challenges that need facing before education can be considered, but considered it must.
Education is one of the eight millennium development goals as set out by the United Nations. It gives children the tools to better their future. This occurs in a number of ways. First, they learn about their basic rights and how governments and agencies can help them. Second, they learn to read, to write and to perform basic arithmetic. These give them access to a wider range of employment once they reach adulthood than they would have had if they had kept out of education.
The problem facing Ankush Foundation and other aid agencies is legion. The three biggest problems are small budgets, a lack of infrastructure and a lack of trained teaching staff. These can be overcome with good will, ingenuity and hard work.
As for equipment, charities like Ankush Foundation try to raise money to buy equipment, but it is all too easy to forget that education requires a few basics. For example, a blackboard, some chalk, writing paper (the Romans used wax tablets), pencils, and textbooks for the teachers. Anything above that can be considered a bonus. While it helps for teachers to be qualified, a natural teacher with enthusiasm and patience can teach from day one. They understand that the most important thing to teach a child is not facts and figures, but to teach them how to love learning. The rest comes from within.
